Climate & Ecology: Off the Rails – University of Plymouth

October 2 @ 6:00 pm 7:30 pm

This is a presentation titled ‘Impact of sea-level rise on atoll islands – is drowning the inevitable outcome?’ by Professor Gerd Masselink, followed by a structured discussion.

The media often tells us that sea-level rising will become a disaster for atoll islands, suggesting that they are destined to drown. For nations like Tuvalu, Kiribati, the Marshall Islands, and the Maldives, rising seas are seen as an existential threat. However, there’s another perspective: atoll islands may have the ability to naturally adapt by raising their elevation through sediment build-up during flooding. This process could help extend their habitability.

In this presentation, we’ll explore both sides of the debate using geological and oceanographic observations, lab experiments, and computer modelling. Drawing on the latest research and real-world case studies, we’ll also discuss a range of adaptive strategies that can be customized to help specific atoll islands cope with the challenges of rising sea levels.

This hybrid event is open to all and can be attended in person or online via Zoom.
