The Box film – John Akomfrah: Arcadia

Experience the UK premiere of a major new multi-screen film commission by visionary artist and filmmaker John Akomfrah.
Arcadia shows stunning scenes of landscapes worldwide, beautiful underwater environments and moving music. It explores the massive impact of the ‘Columbian Exchange’, when lots of plants, animals, metals, goods, people and ideas moved between the Americas, Afro-Eurasia, and Europe from the 15th century.
The movie is on five screens in a cross shape and shows storms, oceans, skies, shores, ice, mountains, rivers, and forests.
Arcadia shows us how amazing our planet is, but it also shows cargo, trade symbols, old ships, germs, cells, and people sick with smallpox. Together, these things make us think about moving places, journeys, how countries meet, and how things grow and break down.
