About The Shark Trust
Safeguarding sharks and shaping a healthier ocean.
The Shark Trust envisions a future where sharks thrive in a healthy, balanced marine ecosystem, recognising their vital role in maintaining ocean health. Guided by this vision, the organisation’s mission is to safeguard the future of sharks through science, education, influence, and action. By addressing challenges on both local and global scales, the Shark Trust strives to create positive change for these essential yet often misunderstood species.
Founded in 1997, the Shark Trust began its journey in Newbury, UK, before relocating to Plymouth in 2000. Its first office—originally designed to be an ice cream parlour—was located near the newly-built National Marine Aquarium and even came with a slushy machine! Over the years, the organisation has grown significantly in size, reach, and influence. Today, its team of 11 operates from Plymouth, leveraging the city’s rich heritage in fisheries and marine science to protect sharks, skates, rays, and chimaeras.
Collaboration has always been central to the Shark Trust’s approach. In 2006, it co-founded the Shark Alliance, a European coalition that successfully advocated for stronger protections for sharks, including the European Community Plan of Action for Sharks (2009) and the landmark European Finning Ban (2013). Recognising the global nature of shark conservation, the Trust launched a Global Plan for sharks and rays in 2016, partnering with international organisations to tackle worldwide challenges. Alongside these global efforts, the Trust continues to work on local campaigns and projects, blending grassroots action with international advocacy.
The Shark Trust’s values underpin every aspect of its work. Commitment drives its long-term dedication to shark conservation, while scientific evidence and sustainability guide its decisions. Integrity and credibility enable the organisation to influence key policy discussions, and collaboration with governments, organisations, and communities amplifies its impact. Embracing innovation, the Trust prioritises creative and effective solutions to conservation challenges.
Today, the Shark Trust proudly represents a diverse global membership base while remaining rooted in the UK. Through perseverance and partnerships, the organisation continues to champion a brighter future for sharks and the oceans they call home.
