The Plymouth region has been recognised as one of the best hiking destinations in the UK, making it the perfect place to embrace the great outdoors this winter. Whether you’re kick-starting a New Year’s resolution or simply craving some fresh air with the family, there’s no better time to wrap up warm and head out on a trail.
Outdoor experts have ranked the best regions in England for hiking, considering factors like the number of trails, trail difficulty, and elevation. Plymouth earned an impressive second place in the league table with a score of 9.22.
Plymouth boasts nine trails per 10 km², 8% of which have an elevation of over 1,000 m, ensuring various challenging hiking experiences. The region is also rich in natural beauty, with 53% of trails featuring wildflowers and 64% offering opportunities for wildlife spotting. Thanks to its relatively warm weather, with an average annual temperature of 10.9˚C, and a stunning coastal location, Plymouth offers year-round hiking appeal. Adding to its charm, the city has seen 1,167 social media posts capturing its incredible sunrises and sunsets.
One of the most popular trails in Plymouth is the iconic South West Coast Path. This renowned long-distance walking route starts in Minehead, Somerset, and runs along the coastline to Poole in Dorset. The sections near Plymouth, in particular, offer spectacular coastal scenery, making them a must-visit this winter season.
