Family Fun: Magical Marine Park

26th July 2022 @ 10:30 am 3rd September 2022 @ 3:30 pm

Plymouth Sound from Mt Edgcumbe

26 July 2022 to 3 September 2022, 10.30am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 3.30pm

Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays throughout the summer holidays

Plymouth is home to the UK’s first National Marine Park – a unique project designed to celebrate and promote the history, habitats and industries of the important and visually stunning Plymouth Sound. Come to The Box each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday throughout the summer holidays to discover more about it and how special it is.

Find out about the amazing environment in and around Plymouth Sound, meet some of its most inspiring organisations – and have lots of creative fun.

Throughout the summer we’ll be joined by the University of Plymouth, the Ocean Conversation Trust, South Devon AONB, Life on the Edge and Green Minds.

Drop in for as little or as long as you like. Please be aware you may have to wait a short while if the session is busy – thanks for your patience.

Activities are most suitable for children aged 4-11 and their adults. These activities will take place in our Learning Room and on Tavistock Place (subject to weather).

Free admission. No need to book.

Week 1: Ocean Animals

Tuesday 26, Thursday 28 and Saturday 30 July, 10.30am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 3.30pm

Join us and experts from the University of Plymouth to make our very own National Marine Park. Create your own ocean animals with craft materials and celebrate everything that’s great about the beautiful Plymouth Sound by making chalk drawings. Remember to look for some of the animals in our Mammoth gallery before you go home too!

Activities are most suitable for children aged 4-11 and their adults. They will take place in our Learning Room and on Tavistock Place (subject to weather).

Week 2: Perfect Pollinators

Tuesday 2, Thursday 4 and Saturday 6 August, 10.30am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 3.30pm

Did you know Plymouth’s National Marine Park is home to seagrass, the only flowering plant in the Ocean? Come and meet Green Minds, who are celebrating Love Parks Week, and make some crafty items that you can take home to inspire you to nurture wildflowers and our local pollinators.

Free. No need to book.

Week 3: Life on the Edge

Tuesday 9, Thursday 13 and Saturday 13 August, 10.30am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 3.30pm

The creatures and plants in the sea need our help to survive but so do many of the insects that live along our coastline. Join the Life on the Edge team from South Devon AONB and Buglife, to discover the 26 endangered bugs and insects that live around the National Marine Park. Create your own Long Horned Bee or Moon Spider, make watercolours, listen to stories and help create a new planter for Tavistock Place.

Week 4 and 5: Super Seagrass

Tuesday 16, Thursday 18, Saturday 20, Tuesday 23, Thursday 25 and Saturday 27 August, 10.30am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 3.30pm

Below the waves of the National Marine Park, thousands of creatures have made their home in seagrass. Join the Ocean Conservation Trust for a printing workshop inspired by them. Put on a virtual reality headset to dive under the waves and admire seagrass up close. Learn how seagrass meadows are being revitalised and make wildflower seed balls in the shape of sea creatures.

Week 6: How Can We Help?

Tuesday 30 August, Thursday 1 and Saturday 3 September, 10.30am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 3.30pm

How can we help protect our amazing marine habitats? Come and meet Plymouth’s Preventing Plastic Pollution project team, make a jellyfish to take home and learn about reducing, reusing and recycling plastic with the help of ocean sandpit.
