About the Marine Biological Association
A champion for marine science, pushing the boundaries of research and acting as a vital voice for the ocean on a global scale.
The Marine Biological Association (MBA), over-looking the UK’s first National Marine Park, is one of the world’s oldest organisations dedicated to understanding our ocean and the incredible life it sustains. Since its founding in 1884, the MBA has been a champion for marine science, pushing the boundaries of research and acting as a vital voice for the ocean on a global scale.
From its prestigious laboratory on Plymouth’s waterfront, the MBA conducts cutting-edge scientific research to further our understanding in the world beneath the waves. Its work has earned Royal Charter status, recognising its role as a world leader in marine biology research. Over the decades, the MBA’s expertise has supported numerous Nobel Laureates and over 170 Fellows of the Royal Society.
The MBA Research Aquarium provides constant supply of seawater; wet laboratory facilities; and systems to maintain living organisms. Working alongside other departments, the Research Aquarium supports the work of both MBA researchers and external scientists across multiple fields to improve our knowledge of ocean biology, coastal ecology and microbiology.
The Continuous Plankton Recorder Survey (CPR Survey) based at the MBA has been a global leader in assessing the impacts of environmental change on our ocean. As one of the longest-running and most widespread marine ecological surveys in the world, it helps scientists understand how marine life is adapting to challenges such as climate change. In 2020, the CPR Survey was awarded a Guinness World Record for covering an incredible 7 million nautical miles.
Fast forward to 2024, and the MBA is celebrating 140 years of discovery and innovation. Its dedicated community of Members spans over 40 countries, offering opportunities to collaborate, learn, and access groundbreaking research.
Whether you’re a budding marine biologist, a seasoned researcher, or simply passionate about protecting our ocean, the MBA welcomes you to join this global network of ocean advocates.
