Plymouth Sound, the UK’s first National Marine Park, is a haven for marine biodiversity and a playground for water enthusiasts. Its stunning waters and rich maritime heritage draw visitors from all over the world, making it a prime location for both recreational activities and environmental education. As such, promoting safety in and around the water is paramount, which is why Drowning Prevention Week holds special significance to us.
Understanding Drowning Prevention Week
Drowning Prevention Week (15th – 22nd June), organised annually by the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK), aims to raise awareness about the dangers of drowning and educate the public on how to stay safe in and around water. This campaign is crucial as it addresses a significant public health issue: drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death worldwide, particularly among young people.
The Relevance to Plymouth Sound National Marine Park
Plymouth Sound National Marine Park is a vibrant hub for various water-based activities, including swimming, kayaking, sailing, and diving. With its diverse marine life and picturesque landscapes, it’s an irresistible attraction. However, the beauty and excitement of the water come with inherent risks.
The Role of the Park in Promoting Safety
We take an active role in promoting water safety year-round, but Drowning Prevention Week provides a focused opportunity to amplify these efforts. The park’s staff, along with local life-saving clubs and emergency services, collaborate to deliver a comprehensive program of activities.
In collaboration with our partner, Plymouth Active Leisure (PAL), we are running the Swim Safe programme that is held at Tinside Lido throughout the summer. Together we will deliver 1,000 watery workshops that will give participants the tools to explore Plymouth Sound National Marine Park safely and with confidence.
“Water safety is not just about knowing how to swim; it’s about cultivating a deep respect for the water and understanding its potential dangers. Swim Safe programmes play a crucial role in building confidence by teaching essential skills and safety protocols. By fostering a culture of awareness and preparedness, these programs significantly reduce the risk of drowning and empower individuals to enjoy the waters of Plymouth Sound National Marine Park and other marine environments safely.” says Kerry Lewis, General Manager of Plympton Swimming Pool, Tinside Lido and Mount Wise Pools.
Activity Groups and Youth Nights with Plymouth Active Leisure
PAL also run multiple swimming sessions a week for young people that are tailored to varying abilities. The sessions cover SCUBA, swim confidence, life-guarding and much more! The Activity Groups and Youth Nights are held at Plymouth Life Centre, Mountwise Pools, Plympton Pool and Tinside Lido.
