Introduction to Foreshore Archaeology

When: 12th March 2023 – 10:00 – 16:30
Where: The Mount Batten Watersports & Activities Centre, 70 Lawrence Rd, Mount Batten,
Plymouth, PL9 9SJ
Who: 12 years and older and able to walk safely on the beach at low tide. Please note that the parents will be responsible for their own children.
Room: Classroom 1
Parking: Parking is available in the Mount Batten centre car park. Once you have parked your car
you need to go to the Watersports Centre reception to give them your car registration details to
avoid being charged for parking.


What you need to bring:
o Sturdy footwear for walking on the foreshore at low tide which will be rocky, damp and
slippery. Suitable footwear includes welly boots, wetsuit boots and walking boots.
o Clothing appropriate for a walk on the foreshore in winter including a waterproof coat and a hat if needed.
o A packed lunch, snacks and water bottle. There are several places to buy lunch at Mount Batten.
o A notebook and pencil that can be taken onto the beach.
What will be provided:
o Tea, coffee, hot and cold water.
o Safety glasses and protective gloves.
o Bags for finds.
o Plastic trowels.
o Tools for washing artefacts.


A first aid kit will be available on site.
If anything of historic importance is found during the day, it must be given to The SHIPS Project so it can be properly managed.

We love it when historic vessels pass through the marine park. Such a lovely sight πŸ’™

This is the Lynher Tamar River barge. It was built in 1896 and underwent a restoration in 1990s. Now it is used for education workshops and sailing experiences around #PSNMP and the River Tamar.
