Our Heritage
A Step Back in Time
Plymouth Sound is alive with history. For centuries, ships have sailed this deep natural harbour, shaping Britain’s Ocean City. From Rame Head to Wembury Beach, every landmark tells part of the story, above and below the waves, where old wrecks now host new life.
The History of our Anchor Points
Each anchor point around Plymouth Sound holds a piece of the past. At Mount Batten, traders once exchanged goods before Plymouth was born. Mount Edgcumbe’s lawns overlook old batteries that guarded the harbour, while Tinside Lido captures the city’s love of sea swimming. Plan your next visit.
Shipwrecks of
the Sound
Beneath the surface of Plymouth Sound lies a hidden history. More than 200 shipwrecks rest on the seabed: trading vessels, warships and fishing boats that once shaped life above the waves. Today, these wrecks have become underwater reefs, alive with colour and movement, where the stories of people and sea continue to meet.
