Sea in our School
What is Sea In Our School?
Sea In Our School is a hands-on education programme from Plymouth Sound National Marine Park – created to spark curiosity, creativity and pride in the sea on our doorstep. Designed for primary schools across Plymouth, it connects pupils with the UK’s first National Marine Park through fun, curriculum-linked experiences across the school year.
Each participating class takes part in three unique sessions that blend real-world exploration with classroom learning:
- National Marine Park Visit: An inspiring trip to one of Plymouth Sound’s landmark coastal sites, packed with discovery and interactive activities.
- Outreach Session: The National Marine Park team brings the sea to the classroom with creative, interactive learning experiences.
- Virtual Experience: A live guided stream from a special site within the Park – letting pupils experience the underwater world up close, without leaving school.
Through themes like science, arts and culture, history and heritage, nature and environment, recreation, and local careers, the programme invites children to see the sea as part of their lives and future.
Launched in 2024 and running through to 2028, Sea in Our School aims to reach every primary school in Plymouth – helping teachers grow their confidence in ocean literacy and place-based learning, supported by a network of local educators and new teaching resources.
There are also opportunities for local collaborators to support delivery – especially through outreach or virtual sessions. Schools can still sign up for the final two cohorts: Year 5 classes starting in September 2026, and Year 6 classes in September 2027.
Sea In Our School is about helping Plymouth’s children learn from, care for, and feel part of their National Marine Park – now and for generations to come.
