Just behind Wembury Beach, Mill Meadow is now home to a brand new Dragonfly Arts Trail thanks to the South Devon National Landscape Life on the Edge project. It is free to explore, easy to follow, and perfect for all ages whether you are heading out with family, friends, or simply fancy a peaceful stroll with a purpose.

As you make your way through the meadow, keep your eyes peeled for eight striking wooden dragonfly sculptures. Each one has been designed and painted by local community groups, drawing inspiration from the wildlife, landscapes and stories that make this corner of Plymouth Sound so special. No two are the same, and that is part of the fun.

But this trail is not just about what you can see. It is about what is happening beneath the surface too.

The Dragonfly Arts Trail has been created to shine a light on plans to restore the wetland habitat in Mill Meadow. Working in partnership with the Environment Agency, the National Trust is exploring simple, practical ways to slow the flow of Wembury Stream and improve water quality before it reaches the bay. It is all part of a bigger picture: healthier rivers, cleaner seas, and a more resilient marine environment for the future.

Dragonflies are the perfect symbol for this story. They rely on clean, thriving freshwater habitats to survive, so spotting them in art or in real life is a sign of a healthy ecosystem.

Sam, National Trust South Devon Community and Volunteering Co ordinator, puts it simply:
“I’ve been incredibly impressed by the creativity on display, each dragonfly is truly unique. Some share the personal stories of their creators, while others reflect the surrounding landscape, local wildlife, and the small actions we can all take to support nature. Do come along and explore the trail, and if you bring your family, be sure to stop by Wembury Marine Centre to pick up a Dragonfly Explorer challenge sheet to enjoy along the way”

And if you like a challenge, there is a little extra to get stuck into.

Pick up a free Dragonfly Explorer Challenge Sheet from Wembury Marine Centre or National Trust staff, then set off on your spotting adventure. Find all eight dragonflies and you will earn a sticker and bookmark, a small reward for a big bit of exploring.

The trail has also brought people together in a brilliant way. Eleanor, part of the NT or WMC volunteer group, shared:
“It has been an absolute joy working alongside fellow volunteers to create beautiful art that we can be proud of. And of course, sharing the story of our river and the incredible diversity of life it supports!”

Whether you are there for the artwork, the wildlife, or simply some fresh sea air, the Dragonfly Arts Trail is a chance to slow down, look closer, and feel more connected to the place we all share.
