Devon’s Maritime History in the 1920’s Symposium

Join with the South West Maritime History Society (SWMHS) and Devon History Society (DHS) at the Rolle Building, University of Plymouth.

During this symposium you will sit in on seven illustrated talks from experts in their fields covering leisure, sailing, fishing, dock-working in North and South Devon, well as the work of the Marine Biology Research group.

  • 10:00 – 10:20am: Refreshments and snacks
  • 10:20 – 11:00am: The growth of yachting in Devon in the interwar years
  • 11:15 – 11:45am: Fishing in Brixham and Plymouth in the 1920s
  • 11:45 – 12:15pm: The Tamar barge fleet in the 1920s
  • 12:15 – 12:45pm: The Torridge in the 1920s
  • 12:45 – 14:15pm: Lunch break
  • 14:15 – 14:45pm: Devonport Dockyard’s Workforce in the 1920s
  • 14:45 – 15:15pm: Coal lumpers and labour relations in Dartmouth during the 1920s
  • 15:15 – 15:45pm: The Work of the Marine Biological Association in the 1920s
  • 15:45pm: Time for questions

The entry fee includes hot drinks on arrival, members of Devon History Society benefit from a £2.50 reduction on the full price of £15.
