Chips by the Sea

Nothing beats fish and chips by the water — and in Plymouth Sound National Marine Park, you’re never far from the perfect spot to enjoy them. Whether you’re grabbing a takeaway after a swim, meeting friends on the waterfront or parking up for a sea view supper, here are some of the best places to pick up chips and enjoy them beside the sea.

Starting simple, we all know chips taste better by the sea. Grab a portion, find a wall or bench and watch the Sound. Just make sure to use the bins or take your rubbish home.

Barbican Benches and Harbour Views

The Barbican and Sutton Harbour are made for fish and chips. Pick up a takeaway from favourites including Harbourside Fish & Chips or Rockfish Plymouth and wander towards the harbour walls, pontoons or waterfront benches.

It’s one of the best spots in the city for people watching, fishing boats and sunset views across the marina — just keep an eye on the gulls, who are experts at spotting an unattended chip.

Mount Edgcumbe Country Park offers a unique way to experience Plymouth Sound, where coastline, parkland and heritage come together across a historic estate. Visitors can explore the house and gardens, take guided tours or enjoy experiences like alpaca walks, all set against a backdrop shaped by Plymouth’s maritime past, including landmarks like the Garden Battery.

Working with the Marine Park, the site has hosted school visits and activities from rockpooling to bat walks. Alongside this, Mount Edgcumbe runs its own events, including the popular Armchair Festival, offering plenty of ways to connect with the Sound.
