Through My Eyes invites Plymouth audiences to experience the sea through migrant mothers’ perspectives
A new immersive sound experience will invite audiences to sit beside the sea at Devil’s Point this July and listen to stories of migration, motherhood, memory and belonging shaped by Polish migrant mothers living in Plymouth.
Through My Eyes is a contemplative audio experience created by artists Agnieszka Blonska and Tori Cannell as part of Sea for Yourself, Plymouth Culture’s long term creative programme in partnership with Plymouth Sound National Marine Park exploring the city’s relationship with the sea.
Experienced through headphones overlooking the ocean, the work has been developed collaboratively with a group of Polish mothers living in Plymouth through a series of workshops exploring storytelling, memory and personal histories. Audiences will be guided into a shared space of listening and reflection, hearing layered voices and soundscapes while looking out across the coastline.
Originally inspired by a previous project developed with young people in Penzance, Through My Eyes has been reimagined for Plymouth and shaped by local voices and experiences.
Agnieszka Blonska said: “We wanted to create a space where people could pause, listen and connect through personal stories and shared experiences of the sea, migration and home.”
Tori Cannell added: “This project has been rooted in collaboration and listening from the very beginning. It has been incredibly moving to develop the work alongside the women whose stories, and perspectives have been central to creating and shaping it.”
The immersive audio experience will take place overlooking Plymouth Sound, near the concrete bunkers at Devil’s Point on Saturday 4 July at 11am and 1.30pm. Tickets are free but bookable in advance with limited capacity.
Through My Eyes is part of Sea for Yourself, a programme led by Plymouth Culture in partnership with Plymouth Sound National Marine Park and Plymouth City Council. The programme development and delivery is supported by The Box, Real Ideas, Arts University Plymouth, University of Plymouth and Theatre Royal Plymouth. Sea for Yourself is funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Arts Council England Place Partnership Fund and Plymouth City Council.
