Get on the water
You don’t need your own boat, paddleboard or specialist equipment to enjoy Plymouth Sound. Sometimes the best way to connect with the National Marine Park is simply to step aboard and see the city from a different perspective.
Getting on the water can be as simple as hopping on a ferry, joining a boat trip or booking a beginner-friendly paddleboarding session. However you choose to do it, there are plenty of ways to get afloat and experience the UK’s first National Marine Park from the water.
Take your first paddle
If you’ve ever fancied trying paddleboarding, South West SUP is a great place to start. Based at Royal William Yard, they offer beginner sessions, guided paddles and social outings for people who want to build confidence on the water. Their experienced instructors provide all the equipment you need, making it easy to give it a go for the first time.
Already comfortable on a board? Join one of their social paddles and explore the UK’s first National Marine Park from a whole new angle.
Hop on the Mount Batten Ferry
Not every on-the-water adventure needs to be active.
The Mount Batten Ferry links the historic Barbican with Mount Batten, offering one of the quickest and most enjoyable ways to get out on the water. Running throughout the year, it’s perfect for a spontaneous mini adventure.
Once across the water, explore Mount Batten Pier, watch boats come and go, or head out on foot along the nearby South West Coast Path towards Jennycliff and beyond.
