Blue Sparks Community Grants Return for Year Two Following a Successful First Year

  • News
Community groups across Plymouth are once again being invited to bring their ideas to life as applications open for the second year of the Blue Sparks Community Grants Programme, helping more people connect with, enjoy and care for Plymouth Sound.

Following a successful first year, the programme returns after supporting ten community projects across Devon and Cornwall, each finding exciting new ways to engage people with Plymouth Sound. From connecting communities with nature and local heritage to improving blue spaces and encouraging more people to explore the marine environment, the projects have already made a positive impact across the region.

Delivered by Plymouth Sound National Marine Park and supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Blue Sparks Community Grants Programme gives grassroots organisations the opportunity to turn great ideas into meaningful community projects.

The scheme offers grants of up to £2,500, funding is available for projects that help people access, explore and better understand Plymouth Sound National Marine Park and its unique blue spaces.

But what are blue spaces? They are the rivers, estuaries and coastal waters that support wildlife, tell the story of Plymouth’s rich maritime heritage, and play an important role in our health and wellbeing. At the heart of these blue spaces is Plymouth Sound, and the Blue Sparks programme aims to help even more people discover, enjoy and learn about this special environment.

Whether it’s creating art that celebrates Plymouth’s maritime heritage, improving local blue spaces, running community events or helping people experience the water for the first time, Blue Sparks is looking to support projects that bring communities closer to Plymouth Sound.

Building on the momentum of the first year, the programme continues to support Plymouth Sound National Marine Park’s vision of making Britain’s Ocean City more accessible, welcoming and enjoyable for everyone.

Community groups, charities and grassroots organisations with ideas that connect people to Plymouth Sound are encouraged to apply and become part of a growing movement helping local people enjoy, understand and protect their National Marine Park.

Applications are now open and groups can apply by completing an application form before the deadline of 28 September. Successful projects will receive funding to help bring their ideas to life and inspire more people to connect with Plymouth’s incredible blue spaces.
